The Health and Medical Emergency Service is composed of various health professionals who are responsible, according to their area of expertise, for different missions:

  • Occupational medicine: monitoring the physical condition of firefighters and their abilities, health prevention, hygiene and safety.

  • Participation in emergency rescue for individuals and medical transport: reinforcement of rescue operations already engaged, delivery of emergency care and/or pain relief according to protocol while awaiting medical care (SMUR, ...), etc.

  • Verification of equipment and materials of the medical-rescue service, management and monitoring of medications, participation in securing treatments and care.

  • Training of firefighters in rescue operations for individuals.

  • Participation in various prevention operations for infectious, toxicological, technological risks...

The physician-firefighter primarily monitors the health status of firefighters and provides emergency care to firefighters injured during major or specific events. SSSM health personnel can then provide health support in the field to perform victim rescue or in the context of traffic accidents.

How to join the SSSM?

To join the Health and Medical Emergency Service, recruitment conditions vary according to the health personnel's profession:

  • For physicians: recruitment is done starting from the second cycle of medical studies, at minimum, for volunteer firefighters (VFF) with a 5-year renewable commitment. For professional firefighters (PFF), recruitment is done through competitive examination or by secondment.

  • For nurses: Only nurses who are already state-certified can join the SSSM. Recruitment is also done through competitive examination or by secondment for PFF. For volunteer service, nurses are encouraged to contact their Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) to learn about recruitment procedures.

  • For pharmacists: The recruitment conditions for pharmacists for the SSSM are substantially the same as those for nurses. Pharmacists must already be state-certified and registered with the National Order of Pharmacists.
