Since 1981, the Merrell brand has been designing and manufacturing hiking shoes. Randy Merrell, the company's founder, started with a pair of custom cowboy boots. He underwent training in industrial shoemaking for handmade shoes. Subsequently, he decided to create high-top hiking shoes, news which spread very quickly. Partnering with two former executives of a ski company, Clark Matis and John Schweitzer, the brand quickly became successful.
