Forging his destiny: Hecham's story within the PSIG

Continuation and end of our interview with Hecham. Discover, among other things, his journey within PSIG, his profile, particularly his passion for sports, but also his essentials as a member of law enforcement. If you haven't had the opportunity, don't hesitate to read our first part, about his beginnings in the Gendarmerie.

Summary:

PSIG integration

After important structural modifications, the PSIG where he serves is now exclusively composed of non-commissioned officers. These changes brought to the structure of this type of unit, at the initiative of Cristian Rodríguez (Director General of the Gendarmerie), occur following a tragic incident involving the death of three gendarmes near Ambert (Lieutenant Cyrille Morel (45 years old), Adjutant Rémi Dupuis (37 years old) and Voluntary Assistant Gendarme Arno Mavel (21 years old)) during an intervention for Domestic Violence (DV). They reflect a desire to further professionalize members within PSIG.

As defense plans manager, Hecham and his team are called upon to coordinate the security of local infrastructures, such as supermarkets for example. In case of threat, his team, trained and prepared, intervenes in direct collaboration with managers to provide effective protection. This process includes planning and preparation of defense measures.

His main missions within PSIG

On a daily basis, they are called upon in the context of:

-          Home interventions to apprehend suspects based on preliminary investigations.

-          Barricaded individuals.

-          Night patrols focused on securing residential areas, particularly in response to an increase in burglaries.

-          Nighttime disturbances which are omnipresent in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. The fact that the city is a bastide and that the number of inhabitants per square meter is high further accentuates cases of noise pollution.

-          Training and instruction of surrounding brigades to strengthen their operational effectiveness.

-          Domestic Violence, one of the most recurring situations.

Hecham emphasizes the importance of approaching these situations with caution and discernment. It is possible, in some cases, that the woman is injured, but that the man defended himself for the first time after suffering violence for several years.

He deplores that collaboration with other law enforcement agencies is limited, particularly the Municipal Police. Attempts at cooperative exercises had been initiated, but the fact that PSIG works mainly at night made this objective difficult to achieve.
This good relationship with research brigades is essential "they are the ones who conduct investigations and the administrative part and when an arrest is necessary, PSIG takes over".

On a daily basis, Hecham follows a rigorous routine, punctuated by sports sessions once or twice a day. This constant physical preparation allows him to be able to react in all circumstances. In addition to these training sessions, they also practice combat sports, all associated with the ORFA method (Optimization of Armed Forces Resources – formerly TOP Potential Optimization Techniques).

This method used more and more frequently allows to face and manage personal fears and apprehensions such as claustrophobia or fear of water, ensuring mental preparation as rigorous as physical.

It consists of preparing and visualizing future actions, like repeating a home intervention after having, beforehand, studied the housing plans, like F1 pilots who tirelessly repeat the gestures of their race.
In his sports practice, he uses it particularly in weightlifting during his CrossFit sessions, by visualizing his movement, repeating it, sequencing it by stages.

All this work has allowed him to face physically demanding trials, like being thrown into the water in Guyana from a canoe, weighted down with his bulletproof vest and his equipment. "I always wanted to exceed myself and if you're not put in difficulty in this kind of situation, how are you going to do the day when you really have to face a problematic situation?"

Hecham's profile

His qualifications

Hecham has been able to develop numerous skills and qualifications over the years:

-          A weapons diploma obtained last year, previously reserved for Mobile Gendarmes, but now open to PSIG departmental gendarmes.

-          A Professional Intervention Monitoring (PIM).

-          An EOR diploma (Explosive Ordnance Recognition), allowing explosive recognition before the arrival of bomb disposal experts, whether IED (explosive), ammunition of any kind, suspicious objects (booby-trapped backpacks, etc.). There are about forty of them with this qualification in the Occitanie region, so that one of them is able to intervene within the hour.

This last diploma does not give them the skills to intervene, but trains them to isolate and secure the threat according to the information transmitted to them.

His passion for sports

Hecham is passionate about sports, whatever it may be, he is keen on CrossFit, football, running and also triathlon. Recently, he started HYROX. A discipline based on eight repetitions of the following sequence: 1000 meters running followed by a specific exercise (rowing machine, skierg, weight carrying, weight pushing, weight pulling, burpees, etc.).

He recently participated in the one in Barcelona in October as well as the one in Bordeaux during April and shone by finishing in a very good 8th place out of 354 participants. His performances allowed him to qualify for the HYROX world championships, which takes place from June 7 to 9, 2024 in Nice.

A little more about him

When asking him what his strengths are, Hecham answers us very simply "My strength is my determination. I didn't have the gendarme or military fiber at all, but ultimately it's been 21 years already, I haven't seen the time pass and retirement is going to be complicated".

We addressed the subject of "returning to civilian life" by asking him if there was any apprehension. "Yes and no, I worked there before entering the Gendarmerie, but it's mainly at the mentality level. In the institution, what you have, you deserve it and if you want to do something, you can do it" even though he had to "wait in line, like everyone else", because in the Gendarmerie, there is a very present hierarchy and seniority system that must be taken into account.
However, this functioning tends to change. Following the PSIG reform, young gendarmes just out of school are directly assigned to PSIG, without having done squadron or brigade, he deplores "they haven't fallen to be able to advance better".

To prepare for this return to civilian life, he focuses on the importance of passions and hobbies by telling us that it is essential to detach oneself a minimum from the Gendarmerie, whether in sports or in associations, "because the day it stops, it's hard if there's nothing on the side. But well, I'm not there yet, I haven't even looked at when it was yet" he says laughing.

His relations with the population

It sometimes happens that people don't distinguish between the man and the gendarme, even having to convince their interlocutor of their willingness to work in favor of the population, like the day when during a site reconnaissance in a supermarket, he had to reassure the hostess who said she was afraid of gendarmes. It makes him laugh, but "it's annoying", he's been practicing for 21 years, "if you haven't understood that I was there to defend you, well too bad for you, the day there's a problem, and you see my face coming to save you, you'll say, fortunately he was there", he tells us very calmly.

He also had to face stereotypes about his Moroccan origins, particularly when presenting his professional card is not enough to convince of his quality as a gendarme, "for once, I was much less subject to that in Paris than in the provinces".

As PSIG today, he patrols in black and by his own will, he put a small "National Gendarmerie" band because he feels the external gaze of people who say "what is he doing with his chest-rig and his vest?".

Sometimes, the anecdote is lighter, like on a Halloween evening, where he is called for nighttime disturbance and where a drunk young man taps him on the shoulder in a very festive manner, congratulating him on his costume.

His projects

Recently, he made a new transfer request to reintegrate an embassy in the Middle East. Where? He doesn't know yet.
"Now, you no longer make "destination" choices, only a continent choice. You will go where your profile, skills, qualifications, rank, family life corresponds, where there will be need.
Whether they send me to Portugal or to the other end of the planet, it doesn't matter, I sign at the bottom right. Because now, after all this, I can announce anything to my wife, she's ready."
