From Auvergne to the Ends of the Earth: Hecham's Journey in the Gendarmerie

Discover the inspiring story of Hecham, a man who, from his roots in Aurillac, has traveled the world thanks to his remarkable career in the Gendarmerie.

Training and first steps in the Gendarmerie

After completing his studies with a BEP in mechanical production, Hecham enlisted in 2004, at age 18, in the Gendarmerie. More specifically in Tulle (Corrèze - 19) as a Volunteer Assistant Gendarme, marking the beginning of his adventure in the French law enforcement forces.

His assignment to the Maritime Gendarmerie at Île Longue takes him away from the family cocoon for the first time, a significant step filled with challenges and memorable anecdotes. He recounts his first journey. After more than 15 hours by train, "I asked the conductor when the train would stop, the journey seemed endless to me"

He is then assigned to Laroquebrou in 2005 then to the PSIG of Aurillac. His determination to advance within the Gendarmerie leads him to pass the competitive exam in 2007, opening the door to intensive training at the non-commissioned officers' school in Chaumont the following year. This training period, including ten months of theoretical and practical instruction, followed by operational training in Aix-en-Provence, allows him to forge not only his technical and tactical skills, but also his leadership, which will be fundamental elements for his future missions and responsibilities.

His unexpected assignment to the Mobile Gendarmerie squadron of Aubervilliers, far from his initial choices, transforms into one of the most significant periods of his career. It is there that Hecham forges strong bonds with his colleagues, discovers a close-knit community and achieves significant professional development, demonstrating that life's unexpected detours can sometimes lead to the most enriching experiences.

Professional journey and significant experiences

The Mobile Gendarmerie

Between 2008 and 2018, Hecham serves as a mobile gendarme, with deployments in places such as St-Martin, New Caledonia, French Guiana, Corsica, Réunion, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. These varied missions allow him to strengthen his expertise and experience strong moments with an entourage sharing the same values as him, particularly in sports.

During these years, and more specifically in 2013, Hecham obtained the Professional Intervention Instructor certification, thus attesting to his skills in combat, shooting and advanced intervention techniques. This qualification allows him to pass on his knowledge and experience to other gendarmes, a vocation he continues to pursue today.

He also tells us about his survival training in French Guiana with the GIGN unit which teaches him the basics of survival in hostile environments, but also backpack optimization for a specific duration (24, 48, 72 hours). He emphasizes the importance of simple but vital precautions thanks to valuable tips in tropical environments, for safety and comfort.

He shares with us the omnipresent risks of the jungle such as the need to place boots upside down in the evening, to avoid unpleasant encounters in the early morning, like tarantulas inside, the incident of a friend bitten by a bat for neglecting to close his hammock or using shaving foam on hammock ropes to keep ants away.

"These situations are crazy and a thousand miles away from our usual daily routines."

There, he participates in operations against illegal gold mining, missions that require extreme physical endurance, combining hours of navigation by dugout canoe and walking in unpredictable and difficult climatic conditions. These interventions highlight the need for rigorous physical preparation and the ability to intervene effectively to neutralize illegal sites within very short timeframes and with little evidence of the presence and organization of the gold miners.

Even though local gendarmes inform them of the presence of these gold mining sites, these missions involve demanding tactical approaches requiring long marches through the jungle to locate and neutralize these clandestine sites, which they find abandoned most of the time upon their arrival.

They are then responsible for destroying the equipment used for gold extraction to prevent these sites from being used again for these practices.

The French Embassy in Burkina Faso

After Aubervilliers and his various experiences around the world, Hecham is assigned to Ouagadougou in a very different role, dedicated to the security and protection of the French embassy on site as well as the personal guard of its ambassador.

On site, he alternates between the gendarme uniform at the embassy and civilian or low-profile attire during his close protection missions. He is equipped with weapons identical to those of the Gendarmerie (SIG Pro 2022 and Famas). This tactical equipment was changed with the arrival of GIGN (LBD, G36, etc.), taking over the ambassador's guard following the rise in political tensions in the country.

He tells us about his departure to Burkina Faso, his move, his settlement with his family in November and his re-engagement for two years. He was supposed to go to Tahiti as a Mobile Gendarme, he tells us with a bit of nostalgia.

When the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contacts him, he is in Saint-Astier, retraining with the squadron. He then learns that he is leaving for Ouagadougou in a few days, "it was my first request, my first approval, I'm going for it".

Following his departure between 2020 and 2021, the French embassy is attacked, a fire breaks out at the consulate. His successors and friends are forced to flee their accommodation to take refuge in the embassy's safety room.

Despite these setbacks, he awaits his next assignment as a GSD (Diplomatic Security Guard).

His return to France

His return to France is to Villefranche-de-Rouergue, a "regional" choice but not localized. As proof, "Villefranche-de-Rouergue, I didn't even know it existed, but those are the vagaries of the Gendarmerie" he tells us with a smile.

With his wife, they wanted the Toulouse region for personal reasons, but he also wanted a PSIG "that moves quite a bit" and ultimately, it worked out well, as Villefranche is part of the top 10 in Occitanie.
