The fascinating history of SIG Sauer dates back to 1853 in Switzerland, with the creation of the Swiss Wagon Factory. Initially specialized in wagon construction, the company quickly expanded its field of activity by venturing into firearms manufacturing. In 1864, it won an important contract for the production of 30,000 Prelaz-Burnand rifles for the Swiss Ministry of Defense, thus marking the beginning of its success in the weapons field. Following this success, it changed its name to become the Swiss Industrial Society, better known by the acronym SIG, thus acquiring international renown.

Over the decades, SIG Sauer has consolidated its position in the global firearms market. In 1985, it established itself in the United States under the name SIGARMS, establishing its first bases in Virginia before expanding to New Hampshire. It then created the SIGARMS Training Academy, a department dedicated to training civilians and law enforcement.

In 2007, the company adopted its current name, SIG Sauer, thus reflecting its evolution and global stature as an internationally renowned firearms manufacturer.

 

Some of SIG Sauer's iconic pistol models have marked the history of gunsmithing. The SIG P49, designed in 1949 for the Swiss army, became an icon of the brand, widely used and appreciated, particularly in competitions. The P220, also introduced in 1949, was specially created to meet the needs of the Swiss army, while the P230 found its place with the Swiss police forces. These models were praised for their unmatched reliability at the time.

In France, SIG Sauer equips several state agencies, including the national police, the gendarmerie and customs, thus demonstrating the trust placed in the brand to meet the rigorous requirements of law enforcement.

Since then, it has equipped the national police, the gendarmerie, customs and the French prison administration in 9 mm Parabellum caliber. This choice was made due to the advanced safety devices it offers, including its hammer safety notch and its "safety" bolt.

Service ammunition has also evolved over time to meet the specific needs of French law enforcement. Initially equipped with RUAG/Geco with armored bullets, they were then replaced by MEN QD1 with red plastic tip bullets, before finally opting for Speer Gold Dot, a "hollow point" ammunition appreciated for its performance and reliability.
