New technologies serving the Gendarmerie

The gendarmerie has recently evolved and developed through the use of several technological advances to facilitate their research, whether scientific or in the field. Many devices have been put to use to counter the threats, analyze them, geolocate them and thus allow for a more global vision for better security.

Summary:

The T.A.C.S

The T.A.C.S (Toolmarks Analysis Comparison System), allows for searching and detecting with precision evidence during a burglary or even during vandalism. The purpose of this tool is to create a very high definition photograph of evidence and traces collected by scientists. It is then possible toanalyze details down to the tenth of a millimeter. The photos are stored in a database to then be analyzed by an algorithm in order to find common points between different shots and, subsequently, reconstruct the scenario of the event. If we take the example of a burglary, this technology will allow for determining with precision the tools used by the criminals to break a padlock, force a door, etc.

3D photogrammetry

3D photogrammetry also known as scanning or 3D photography allows for reconstructing a photo in three dimensions by taking shots of an object from different angles. Concretely, law enforcement officers can use their smartphones or even the NeoGend tablets (Android reserved for Gendarmerie military personnel) and take burst photos of a face or object to reconstruct a 3D photo. It can be part of the evidence attached to the investigation report as a "digital exhibit".

This tool has several advantages. First, it avoids the need to create plaster casts, which constitutes a real time saving for investigators. Moreover, it is used via scientific software to perform analyses and measurements. Photogrammetry, in itself, allows for measuring directly on an image the dimension of an individual or any object.  If we take the example of a person filmed by surveillance cameras, it will be easier to identify the suspect's characteristics.

The 4G bubble

The 4G bubble allows operators from RAID, GIGN or even BRI to coordinate in real time. Concretely, it presents itself as a mini 4G network composed of transmitters located in dedicated backpacks. This bubble is completely independent and will be connected to the frequencies of the Ministry of the Interior to avoid interference related to the external environment such as commercial or local networks, and in order to maintain a certain discretion. Thanks to this network, members of elite groups will be able to call each other vocally or by video and even watch the videos from onboard cameras, share documents as well as geolocate themselves. This tool is reserved for smartphones or tablets equipped with the "Team on mission" application. This technological advance is only possible thanks to 4G innovations, and its brand new "Mission Critical" function, allowing for the evolution of exchanges between different units during emergency situations.

Drones

The drones are designed to reduce the number of men and women mobilized in operations. This new technological tool allows for conducting surveillance via their onboard camera. Drones are also used for highway overflights to replace radars, to have a global view of traffic and then spot drivers and motorcyclists in violation. In this period of health crisis, they are used to monitor compliance with lockdown rules as well as the use of exit exemptions.

These four technological advances are generating an evolution within the Gendarmerie. Indeed, the new professions associated with them are creating new vocations and an increase in recruitment. In a concern for performance and improvement of its procedures, the Gendarmerie constantly seeks to find new innovations. We will not fail to keep you informed of future developments.
