Surefire: leader in the field of lasers

SureFire tells the story of what can be accomplished with light. The story begins in 1969 when an engineer with a doctorate from Cal Tech decided that the future was in lasers. Dr John Matthews founded Newport Corporation to harness the power of laser in industrial applications.

Over the next ten years, Newport Corporation became a leader in the field of lasers, emerging as a pioneer in many industrial laser applications. Patents were issued, contracts were won, business boomed.

Riding on success, John's inventive spirit turned to his hobby and passion, shooting. He wondered if a laser could be adapted to serve as a sight on a firearm. In 1979, John's concepts became reality when he designed and patented a laser sight.

Eventually, the name SureFire became so synonymous with excellence in handheld lighting tools that the company name, Laser Products, was replaced with SureFire LLC.
