Logistics and transport: The exceptional convoy

Parameters of an exceptional convoy

A convoy is considered exceptional when the transport vehicle exceeds one of the following characteristics:

- A length of more than 16.5 m

- A width of more than 2.55 m

- A weight of more than 44 tons

The nature of the goods matters little, it can be goods transport, machinery or vehicles.

The exceptional transport universe is classified into three main categories :

Each category obviously requires specific rules to be followed in order to preserve the integrity of the load as well as all the actors involved in this convoy.

Exceptional convoy professions

The exceptional transport sector, although little publicized, is recruiting and, whether to prepare or carry out convoys on the road, the possible positions are numerous, here are some examples :

- Road driver

- Road convoy driver

- Construction equipment road driver

- Road driver of a unit with crane arm

- Pilot car

- Motorcycle guide

- Operator

- Transport authorization agent

For example, we will present the pilot car, essential for 2nd and 3rd category transports.

The pilot car therefore intervenes on large convoys to secure the transport of goods or merchandise as well as for the protection of other road users. It signals the convoy's arrival by being ahead of it. It mainly takes care of clearing the way for the driver and warning other users of the passage of the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) or super heavy goods vehicle (SHGV).

Special case, if the convoy travels on a dual carriageway with separated lanes, this pilot car will position itself at the rear of the convoy to protect it.

In certain situations, there may be two pilot cars, at the front and rear. Furthermore, these same cars can guide the HGV or SPL driver in delicate maneuvers (turns, letting pass, etc.)

The attire of exceptional transport operators

Often traveling at night, exceptional transport actors must equip themselves with a signaling system if they need to get out of the truck, or when the convoy is stopped. In addition to road signage panels, it is recommended to wear reflective clothing.

A simple HV vest can do the job although we would prefer, in cold weather, a nice jacket or high-visibility parka or even a high-visibility vest specially printed with " exceptional convoy " (available on quote). Note that it must be special clothing compliant with EN 20471 standard class 2 or 3.

Furthermore, it is important to be comfortable in your attire for these transports that can last several hours. This is why we recommend work joggers or flexible work pants.

A pair of safety shoes is certainly not negligible given that it is appropriate for the driver to load and unload the goods. In some cases, it may be necessary to wear a safety helmet.

You will find on VET SÉCURITÉ, all the clothing, shoes and accessories suitable for transport and logistics professions.
