What is HYROX?

HYROX is an international indoor fitness event that has revolutionized sports standards since its creation in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany. Designed to bring together all performance enthusiasts, this unique competition combines running and high-intensity functional exercises in a rigorous sequence. It offers a complete challenge, structured and measurable, that pushes participants to push their physical and mental limits, engaging both their cardiovascular endurance, their muscular strength and their mental resilience.

What distinguishes HYROX from other fitness competitions is its standardized format worldwide, allowing for comparison of athletes' performances on an international scale through global rankings.

The race format: A structured and complete challenge

Each HYROX follows an identical format worldwide:

  • 8 km of running, divided into 8 segments of 1 km
  • 8 functional exercise stations, to be completed after each running segment

Participants must complete this demanding course in the following order:

  1. 1 km run, then SkiErg (1000 m)
  2. 1 km run, then Sled Push (Sled pushing) (50 m)
  3. 1 km run, then Sled Pull (Sled pulling) (50 m)
  4. 1 km run, then Burpee Broad Jumps (push-ups and jumps) (80 m)
  5. 1 km run, then Rowing Machine (1000 m)
  6. 1 km run, then Farmer Carry (Walking with weights in each hand) (200 m)
  7. 1 km run, then Sandbag Lunges (Lunges with sandbag) (100 m)
  8. 1 km run, then Wall Ball (Squat with medicine ball throws) (100 repetitions)

This rigorous structure ensures that every participant, regardless of the country where they compete, faces exactly the same challenge, thus ensuring equal conditions between athletes and comparability of performances at a global level. This unique standardization in the fitness world not only establishes fair competition, but also allows tracking personal progress or aiming for an international ranking on solid foundations.

Categories for all levels

HYROX is designed for all athletes, regardless of their experience level, thanks to different categories:

  • Open: For participants discovering the discipline or wishing to compete with standard loads

  • Pro: For experienced athletes, with heavier loads for an additional challenge

  • Doubles: As a pair, partners run together and share the functional exercises

  • Relay: In a team of four, each member completes two running segments and two exercise stations

Competitors are also classified by age groups, generally divided into five or ten-year brackets, such as 16–24 years, 25–29 years, 30–34 years, etc. This system ensures fair competition among participants, taking into account physiological differences related to age, and allows everyone to compete against opponents with similar characteristics.

HYROX in France: See you in Paris in 2025

France is not left behind in this global adventure! In 2025, HYROX returns to Paris for its third edition, which will be held from October 23 to 26 at the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Center, after an already intense first appearance organized from April 18 to 20 at the Grand Palais.

This major event is aimed at both beginners curious to experience their first HYROX, and experienced athletes seeking performance and ranking. Participants can choose to register solo for a personal challenge, as a duo to share the effort and strategy, or in relay, in teams of four, for a collaborative and dynamic approach. This adaptable format allows everyone to find their place, regardless of their objective or level of preparation.

A lightning-fast global expansion

Since its creation in 2017, HYROX has experienced impressive growth, evolving from a local event in Germany to a global phenomenon. In 2025, more than 80 events will be organized across five continents, with iconic stops in New York, London, Sydney, Dubai and Tokyo. The HYROX community is expected to count more than 550,000 participants and 350,000 spectators, proof of massive enthusiasm for this hybrid competition format mixing performance, accessibility and collective spirit of achievement.

This rapid expansion testifies to the growing enthusiasm for this discipline that perfectly combines endurance, strength and competitive spirit, while offering an accessible and measurable format.

The World Championships: The Season's Pinnacle

For the most ambitious competitors, HYROX offers a qualification system based on performances achieved during official events. At each event, the best athletes in each category accumulate points or directly validate their ticket to the World Championships, according to their ranking and time. This prestigious event, the true pinnacle of the season, brings together the global elite in an atmosphere of intense and spectacular competition, where the title of international functional fitness champion is at stake.

In 2025, the HYROX World Championships will be held in Chicago, United States, offering an exceptional spectacle and high-level performances. From June 12 to 15, the world elite of the discipline will gather in the iconic setting of Navy Pier, an emblematic venue of the city. This return to American soil, after two consecutive editions in Europe, testifies to the growing enthusiasm for HYROX on an international scale. Thanks to its modern infrastructure and large capacity, Chicago establishes itself as the ideal host to make this event an unforgettable moment for both athletes and spectators.

And this year, we have one more reason to follow the event closely: Hecham, our VetSécurité ambassador, has qualified for the HYROX World Championship in Chicago!
