The 132nd Cynotechnical Infantry Regiment

The 132nd Infantry Regiment was established in 1794 and has since participated in numerous battles, the most emblematic being: The Napoleonic Wars, as well as World War I and World War II.

It takes pride in a double lineage: that of the 132nd Infantry Regiment which distinguished itself during the Revolution and that of the cynological units of veterinary formations from which it has preserved the expertise in military cynology.

The history of the 132nd Cynological Infantry Regiment

Throughout History, the regiment has changed its designation several times:

- 132nd Line Infantry Half-Brigade (when created in 1794);

- 132nd Line Infantry Regiment (1811);

- 132nd Infantry Regiment (1873);

- 132nd Fortress Infantry Regiment (1936);

In 1977, cynology took on increasing importance in the armed forces and the 132nd Army Cynophile Group was born from the merger of the 24th Veterinary Group and the 132nd Infantry Regiment. In 1999, it became the 132nd Army Cynophile Battalion (132nd BCAT).

Finally, on July 1, 2019, within the framework of the "Au Contact" model, it became the 132nd Cynological Infantry Regiment (132nd RIC).

Its flag has been decorated with the Military Valor Cross with palm following its action in Afghanistan. Its fourragère bears the colors of the 1914-1918 War Cross.

Its motto: "One against eight" was given following the honor that Emperor Napoleon bestowed upon this regiment after its victory at Rosnay in 1814.

The missions of the 132nd Cynological Infantry Regiment

The 132nd Infantry Regiment's mission is to prepare an inseparable man-dog team, capable of providing specialized support to infantry units. It ensures all specific missions related to the use of military dogs. It provides cynological support during operations for explosive detection, ammunition as well as detection and neutralization of enemies.

The 132nd RIC contributes to protecting important sites in metropolitan France. It is also part of the special operations support group. It is the only unit of this specialty.

This capability allows it to be present simultaneously and permanently in all theaters of operation: the regiment is present in self-rotation on various operations such as in Mali, Lebanon, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, and French Guiana.

The regiment manages the entire canine force of the Army and participates in the development of manual and regulation projects aimed at advancing military cynology. It maintains a dynamic capacity for experimentation and innovation aimed at keeping it informed of the requirements and constraints of its operational commitments.

It also conducts technical and tactical tests on the use of dogs in combat. The regiment purchases dogs (approximately 300/year) intended for the three armed services, various ministries and state administrations as well as for foreign countries.

The regiment is composed of:

- 2 intervention cynological companies;

- 1 command and logistics company;

- 1 company specialized in explosive detection and search;

On July 1, 1977, it settled at the Imperial Farm of Piémont in the Mourmelon camp near Reims. It has trained approximately 350 war dogs per year since the 2000s and in 2019 has Europe's largest kennel.
