The telescopic baton, or telescopic baton, is a non-lethal weapon, primarily used by law enforcement or security agents in many countries.

Summary:

What is a telescopic baton?

The telescopic baton, also called telescopic defense baton, generally made of metal (ordinary steel or hardened steel), is composed of three deployable parts. The two upper parts can thus retract into the handle, this way the baton can be easily stored in its holster.

There are different types of telescopic batons :

  • hardened and non-hardened steel batons
  • non-slip handle or foam handle
  • 16 inches (40 cm open, 17 cm closed)
  • 21 inches (53 cm open, 21 cm closed)
  • 26 inches (66 cm open, 25 cm closed)

Use of the telescopic defense baton (TDB)

How to open the telescopic defense baton TDB?

  1. Hold the telescopic baton firmly by the foam or non-slip handle and with a quick wrist or forearm movement, unfold the elements so they lock in the open position. The sharper and firmer the movement, the better the locking in the open position will be. Make sure you don't risk injuring anyone when opening. Opening in vehicles is strongly discouraged.
  2. Always maintain control of the telescopic baton and respect striking techniques and zones.
  3. If the TDB closes completely or partially during use, it means it was not opened properly. In this case, repeat the opening procedure.

How to close a telescopic baton?

  1. To easily unlock the parts, it is recommended to gently tap the tip of the baton on a solid surface. To close the telescopic defense baton, hold it just between the thumb and index finger and let it descend thanks to its weight perpendicular to the ground. Do not hold it firmly with a closed hand, in this case the baton often risks not being perpendicular to the ground! By lowering the TDB with a quick movement, but without excessive force, strike its end vertically on a hard, flat and smooth surface. The speed of the movement is more important than the force!
  2. WARNING! The telescopic baton closing process can damage the surface on which you close it. Striking it on a soft surface or elastic, such as wood or carpet, will not unlock the cone ends.
  3. To keep the baton in good condition, never close it on a dirty surface (sandy or muddy for example), to prevent impurities from entering inside. Never close the telescopic baton if the safety cap is not present. When the tubes are unlocked, it is not necessary to strike to make them enter the rubber handle, you risk damaging the surface.

You are now ready for your law enforcement missions or for your interventions.

How to carry your telescopic defense baton?

Now that you have chosen your telescopic baton, you need to find a way to carry it easily without it being cumbersome.

The holster is the most widespread solution, attached to the tactical belt, it will be the ideal tool during your interventions to have the telescopic baton within reach.

You have several types of baton holders, the one that attaches to the duty belt (rotating or not), the holster with a MOLLE attachment or holsters directly placed on tactical vests. All are manufactured by default to accommodate 21-inch batons (regulatory size for batons of the Gendarmerie, Police, etc).

Most telescopic batons sold at vetsecurite.com are delivered with a belt or duty belt holster.

Legislation for telescopic batons

It is given the name telescopic defense baton (TDB) in the context of its use by law enforcement (national gendarmerie, municipal police, national police and Prison Administration).

Its use is also authorized by SNCF and RATP law enforcement. In France, however, for a private individual, the telescopic baton is authorized (only for possession at the owner's home: legislation on category D weapons).

Carrying and transporting them is prohibited.

Security agents must first inquire with their employer or directly with their prefecture to know if the use of TDB is authorized during their missions.
